Indonesian adolescents’ perspectives on smoking habits: a qualitative study

Abstract Background The prevalence of smoking among adolescents is high in Indonesia. Therefore, this qualitative research aimed to explore the perspectives Muslim on habits as a reference for developing effective prevention programs. Methods Three focus group discussions involving 24 junior school male students (mean age = 13.75 years) were main source data phenomenological study. discussion guide was developed by researchers based reviewed literature and validated experts. findings analyzed using an inductive content analysis with systematic steps stages analysis. Results Adolescent grouped into two themes: perception smoking-related factors. encompassed three sub-themes: social habit, contradictive feelings, Islamic perspective. factors included peer pressure, parents’ status, masculinity curiosity. results indicated that consider habit but contradictory feelings. also stimulated imitating parents who smoke, feeling masculine Conclusion We suggest health professionals are interested programs Indonesia should adolescent perspective so program will be more appropriate adolescents.
